In March 2021, the Disney Star Wars Starcruiser resort made its debut to the public. It is the most innovative and unique hotel on Earth. The moment guests arrive at the Galactic Starcruiser, they are immediately transported into an immersive Star Wars adventure. There is some bad news however, Disney’s Galactic Starcruiser will be closing permanently in 2023 due to lack of demand.
There was so much pent up excitement when the Galactic Starcruiser opened earlier this year. The multiyear construction project was hyped up since construction began and didn’t let guests down when it opened. The hotel was completely booked for the first few months of operation, however that demand has since trailed off significantly and is causing Disney to close the hotel permanently.
The cost to stay in the Galactic Starcruiser is $1,209 per guest per night for a standard cabin. It’s a 2 night immersive experience, making the total bill for 2 guests for 2 nights $4,809. Initially it was no problem for Disney to find people to book the rooms. There were so many people chomping at the bit to spend a night in this fantasy resort.
Now Disney is running into a demand problem. The pool of consumers willing to pay nearly $5,000 for a 2 night hotel stay is extremely small. Those who wanted to experience the resort already have and now Disney is struggling to fill the rooms. In fact, over the past few weeks, the Galactic Starcruiser has not reached more than 50% capacity on any of the nights.
The operating costs of the Galactic Starcruiser is extremely high. The hotel is all about the experience, which requires a lot of employees to put on a big interactive show. On top of that, this is one of the most technologically advanced hotels in the world. The cost to run, maintain, and fix all of the technology in the resort is starting to get expensive.
After running financial projections based on the huge decline in demand, Disney has decided to close the Galactic Starcruiser after less than a year of operation. Disney has not yet stated what they will be doing with the Starcruiser hotel. They have not mentioned if they will build something else there or if they will let it sit for now. Did you get a chance to stay at the Galactic Starcruiser?
