Ringing in the new year in Times Square is one of the most popular events of the year. Over 1 million people are expected to be in Times Square for the ball drop in and over 1 billion people are expected to watch it on TV in 2022. Disney sees this as an amazing marketing opportunity to kick off their 100th Anniversary Celebration.

It has just been announced that Disney is the official sponsor of New Year’s Eve 2022. They will be sponsoring everything around Times Square and be the biggest partner to ring in the new year. The past few years Planet Fitness has been the main sponsor, however Disney will be replacing them in 2022 and they have some great plans up their sleeve.

Kicking off the new year is a great marketing tactic by The Walt Disney Company and might be their best marketing initiative ever. The person behind this idea is truly a genius and here’s why. January 1st, 2023 is the first day of the 18 month, 100 year anniversary for Disney. Disney is taking advantage of the massive New Year’s celebration to celebrate and market their 100 year milestone. They are ringing in the new year, but focusing everyone’s attention on Disney and their 100th anniversary in the process.

As the official sponsor of the event, Disney will have control over the giant ball that drops. Disney will be Disneyifying the giant ball. The ball has been changed to the shape of a Mickey head as seen in the image above. This is the first time in history since the first drop in 1907 that the ball in Times Square will not be just a ball. However, they are doing more than just changing the ball shape.

Disney will also be playing a 60 second film on the ball as everyone counts down the final 60 seconds of 2022. This will be much like the shows Disney does on Cinderella Castle and Spaceship Earth. Disney is going to fill the 60 seconds with the most iconic moments in Disney history over the past 100 years from Oswald The Lucky Rabbit, to the most recent films like Encanto and Luca. When the ball hits the bottom and the new year starts, so does the Disney 100th Anniversary. This is such a perfect tie in for Disney.

On top of all of this, everyone in Times Square will get official New Year’s Eve Disney 100th anniversary hats, glasses, and shirts. This will be exciting for anyone who is lucky enough to attend this event in person. We expect to see a lot of this merch being sold on eBay after the event for high prices.

There was no mention of the cost for Disney to sponsor New Years Eve and change the famous ball, however we are guessing it’s at least $50 million. We are very excited for Disney to take over as the New Year’s Eve sponsor. The show on the ball and the kick off of Disney’s 100th Anniversary is going to be amazing.
