Initially, there was a lot of negative reaction to this, however, Disney proceeded with releasing the trailers anyway. Then, more and more backlash came surrounding the movie, eventually forcing Disney to completely cancel it.

This is a shame for Disney because Moana 2 was expected to be one of the highest-grossing movies for them. In fact, Disney movies continue to flop in the theaters, but Moana 2 actually had hopes of success.

Now, the movie has been canceled until further notice. According to an internal source, Disney is looking at ways to save the work that has already been done. They have spent tens of millions of dollars on the film and don’t want to lose their investment.

They also don’t want to let the Moana series die. It’s likely that they will take bits and pieces of the storyline and change it, so Moana 2 doesn’t revolve around Moana being transgender. However, this is going to essentially require an entire rewrite of the script and a lot of rework with the animation.

If Disney does release Moana 2, it likely won’t happen until 2027 at the earliest given how much they have had to scrap and how much they need to rework it. Disney was originally all in on this new direction, however, financially they can’t take another huge hit at the box office.
