Disney has had a lot of involvement in football over the years. The “I’m going to Disney World” line after the Super Bowl is one of the most well-known connections. In fact, Disney will host the Super Bowl in 2025, which we reported on here. Disney also has a connection to baseball with the Wide Wild of Sports, but it’s limited to Spring Training. However, they are getting into baseball a lot more with the announcement that they officially bought the Tampa Bay Rays.

Disney is looking for ways to diversify their company. Ruining movies like Moana by making her Transgender isn’t working nor is removing the dwarfs from Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Disney continues to make bad business decisions that are getting them in trouble with their fans. They hope that buying the Tampa Bay Rays will be the first smart business decision in a while.
Disney Buys the Tampa Bay Rays
According to ESPN, in 2023, the Tampa Bay Rays were 27th out of 30 for fan attendance. Despite being a good baseball team, they fail to attract fans. In fact, the Oakland A’s had a similar problem, except their team was bad. Because of this, the team is moving to Las Vegas. Now, Tampa Bay Rays are in a similar position, being sold to Disney and will move to a new stadium coming to the Wide World of Sports at Disney World.

Disney purchased the Tampa Bay Rays for $1.5 billion. On top of that, Disney will build a $2 billion baseball stadium for the Rays. This will be one of the most expensive stadiums in the US. Each level of the stadium will have a different theme. Those themes include Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars. Also, there will be rides throughout the stadium to add to the fun atmosphere. There will even be a Peoplemover to transport people around the stadium and Tower of Terror-style elevators.
Also in typical Disney fashion, they will sell plenty of Disney merchandise at the stadium. They will also sell Disney foods like Mickey Ice Cream Bars, Mickey Waffles, Chicken Tenders, Mickey Burgers, and more. Of course, Disney will serve Dole Whip too. Also, Disney will allow anyone to drink, with the announcement that Disney removed the drinking age here.
Disney Rebrands The Rays to The D23s
As part of the purchase of the Rays, Disney is rebranding the team to The D23s. This is historic as it will be the first MLB ever to have numbers in their name. Also, their jerseys will be different every single series. That’s right, Disney will constantly rotate jerseys throughout the year. Each jersey will have a different name on the front and a design. Of course, all of these jerseys will relate to the Walt Disney Company.

Given how large Disney is, they will never run out of options. A few initial jerseys are seen above. As you can see these jerseys are all themed to different Disney and Pixar movies. We expect to see many more jerseys rolled out over the next few months. These jerseys will be themed to the Disney Parks, Star Wars, Marvel, Simpsons, National Geographic, and more. There are so many jersey options for the new Disney D23s MLB team.
Disney expects this to be a huge money maker. First, the exciting stadium will bring people to the game. Second, rotating jerseys every week will encourage people to buy the different themed jerseys. Disney plans to sell these novel jerseys in the stores as well as game-used jerseys at the end of each series to make even more money. The D23s will replace the Rays starting in 2025.
