Disney continues to struggle to please people. No matter what decision they make, they find a crowd of outraged people. For example, forcing all guests to wear pronoun pins, which we reported on here, had a lot of people furious. However, on the other end, the Trump rally coming to Disney World had others angry. Disney is stepping into controversial land again with the announcement that racist jokes are returning to the Jungle Cruise.
For those not familiar, the Jungle Cruise is a roughly 10-minute ride through some of the most famous rivers in the world. Guests travel through the Nile, Congo, Amazon River, and more. Their journey is guided by a skipper, who tells jokes throughout the ride. Many of the jokes are simple puns and “dad jokes”. If you don’t believe us, you’re in da-Nile. However, some of the jokes were removed because they were deemed offensive, but those jokes are making a return.
Racist Jokes on the Jungle Cruise
The announcement that the racist jokes are returning to the Jungle Cruise at Disney World came out of left field for Disney. However, we need to take a step back to understand the history and what jokes were banned. When we use the term racist, we are using the terms deemed by pop culture and the internet. In fact, many people thought these jokes were funny and few thought they were offensive, however, those who shout the loudest always seem to win.
There are two main parts of the Jungle Cruise attraction that underwent significant changes to remove the “racist” parts of the ride. It’s worth noting that these parts were in the ride for 66 years at Disneyland before anyone considered removing them back in 2021, however, those jokes are now making a return. Both the Headhunter Tribe and Trader Sam will make a return to the Jungle Cruise at Disney World, this fall.
As a reminder, Trader Sam sold shrunken heads at the Jungle Cruise and was arrested in a cannibalism scandal. However, he is returning as the “head salesman” and will be offering his usual deals, one of your heads for two of his. Anyway you slice it or dice it, you’ll still come out ahead. Also, headhunter territory is coming back, which is a terrible place to be headed. You’ll also see them dancing in circles because they forgot how to square dance.
Why are Racist Jokes Returning to the Jungle Cruise?
It comes as a surprise that Disney would bring “racist” jokes back to the Jungle Cruise. However, this isn’t the first time we have seen them revert course. For example, the announcement that the live-action Snow White movie is canceled. On the other hand, Disney is moving forward casting Jada Pinkett Smith as Rapunzel in that new live-action movie. It appears Disney is picking as many lanes as they can to please different people.
Disney is reinstating the racist jokes on the Jungle Cruise because of fan interest. According to an internal source, Disney has done extensive consumer testing and research and found that the jokes about Trader Sam and the headhunters are some of people’s favorite jokes on the entire ride. Because of this, Disney is bringing them back, despite the jokes being deemed offensive and racist.
This news has many people excited for the reasons stated above. However, others are so mad that Disney would bring racism back to a ride, especially since Disney is retheming Peter Pan’s Flight to Up Spirit of Adventure for a similar reason. Clearly, this is a heated discussion on both sides and there is expected to be a lot of outrage from people who have never been on the Jungle Cruise in their life, per usual.
