Disney loves to do crossovers when it comes to popular shows and movies. For example, Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana was a top-tier mashup. It combined all of the best Disney Channel shows into one episode. Now, Disney is back at it with a Star Wars and Star Trek crossover, which is coming soon to Disney+.

Star Wars continues to be a top property for Disney. Despite the news of both Galaxy’s Edge and The Galactic Starcruiser closing, it’s still a focus. In fact, Disney even has plans to retheme Spaceship Earth to the Star Wars, which we reported on here. Disney is taking another big leap with the announcement of the Star Wars and Star Trek crossover.
Disney Acquires Star Trek?
The first question that comes to mind for many people is how can Disney make a show that involves Star Trek. Star Trek is owned by Paramount and CBS, not Disney. However, this isn’t anything new for Disney. In fact, Disney is doing a Friends reboot, Sharknado 7, and a Purge movie at Disney World. All of these are examples of Disney licensing the rights to popular franchises to add new movies and shows to their portfolio.

In this case, many people are wondering if Disney acquired Star Trek. According to an internal source, Disney did not acquire the rights to Star Trek, nor do they have any plans to do so. Instead, they will be working closely with Paramount to bring this new Star Trek and Star Wars crossover movie to Disney+. The production of this new film will be a combined effort of the two studios.
However, in the structure of the deal, Disney acquired the rights to stream it on Disney+, rather than Paramount+. Many people are speculating that this is the early stages of Disney making a move to acquire Star Trek. If they got the rights to Star Trek, this would allow them to sell more merchandise and expand into their theme parks with Star Trek rides. This is a compelling model for Disney and they are taking the first steps towards that direction.
Star Wars and Star Trek Crossover
So what is the plot of the new Star Wars and Star Trek crossover coming to Disney+? According to an internal source, the movie starts out with Captain Kirk and his crew exploring space when they come across the Star Wars galaxy. Throughout the film, there are various struggles and times when characters need to overcome adversity. There are also incredible fights between the two franchises and moments where they pair up to destroy evil.

At one point, Spock finds himself in an intriguing mind meld with Yoda. The two share insights on the nature of The Force and logic, discovering surprising parallels in their philosophies. Meanwhile, Captain Kirk and Han Solo formed an unlikely alliance, each respecting the other’s command style and learning valuable lessons from their contrasting approaches.
At the end of the movie, we see a strong alliance between the Enterprise and the Rebellion. They join forces and overcome massive hurdles as a team. The ending leaves the two groups working as one. While the plot line is still in development, it is intended to leave the door open for future movies and/or shows where Star Wars and Star Trek crossover.

What a dumb idea! Star Wars was in a galaxy far away a long long time ago (past) and Star Trek is in our galaxy in our future. This is about as dumb as combining Daniel Boone and Rambo cause they both take place in the woods.
Time travel features in over 50 episodes of Star Trek and in four of the movies, making it one of the franchise’s most commonly used storytelling mechanics. There were a few episodes where Starfleet vessels got flung out into other galaxies by extremely powerful “Q” species and the Traveler being, for example. While most of episodes took place within the Milky Way, that is no limitation for possible Star Trek storyline. Boone and Rambo were completely lacking any time travel capabilities.

This is the dumbest possible way to do this. It ignores the fact that Star Trek takes place in the future and Star Wars takes place in the past. I’m definitely giving this a miss.
From the Star Wars perspective, perhaps, unless the Force could be used for time travel. However, clearly for Star Trek, time travel is so commonly used, it is in over 50 episodes.
While this is parody for parody sake, I’ll join in the nonsense fun. No, OBVIOUSLY this isn’t happening. But, what if someday the studios did work together on a crossover? Here’s what would need to happen. Time-travel (from one side or the other) as Star Wars occurs in the past and Star Trek in the future. Also, as the galaxies are far, far away, some wormhole or other phenomena would need to occur. Solve for those two issues, and the sky is the limit.
