Disney removes “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from Mulan. The entire song and scene has been cut from the animated movie on Disney+.
This is because it promotes harmful gender stereotypes. Disney does not feel that the song is appropriate or inclusive in today’s world. In fact, they are apologizing for including the song in the movie in the first place.
According to an official statement, “We are sorry for offending people with the song “I’ll Make a Man Out of You”. We understand that it promotes harmful stereotypes and creates a hostile environment. We wish we could go back and prevent the song from ever existing, however, we cannot. The best we can do is remove it and learn from our past injustices.”
An internal source has confirmed to us that Disney is looking to compose a new song for this scene. They want it to be more about strength and fighting and less about men. They are looking to call this new song, “Built Tough”.
What’s cool is it would be designed to work within the existing scene in the movie. Our source mentioned some of the lyrics might be “We are strong, we are fast, we will fight to fix the past”.
This has a dual purpose as it fits the movie and speaks to the past controversial song. However, many people think Disney should have just left the song as is and that this is a waste of time and energy.
